He is ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. In the event of the occurrence of a vacancy in the office of the President, by reason of death, resignation or removal or otherwise, the Vice-President acts as President until the date on which a new President is elected. When the President is unable to discharge his functions owing to absence, illness or any other cause, the Vice-President discharges his functions until the President resumes duty.
