PDL: page description language it specifies the layout and elements of a printed page and is processed through the the computer driver. Most commons are HP Printer Control Language (PCL) and Adobe's Postscript. All consumer printers use them. Most industrial printers have a wat to use them too (Zebras, Eltron etc.)

PDL has many advantages so I won't list them all, it especially deals very well with graphics (special fonts, TT fonts are graphics). On the other hand, Dot Matrix printers (most of them) do not function with PDL and needs to be programmed to print out graphics (say a company logo on an invoice, unless you use preprinted blank invoices).

To answer your second question you know if your printer is PDL based when you check its BIOS (there should be a command when you press a button and then turn on the printer) or its drivers on the host computer.
